An Air India pilot is facing disciplinary action after being denied entry into the United States and sent back to India this week for allegedly carrying marijuana while travelling as a passenger on a flight to San Francisco. The pilot, who was “deadheading” to operate a subsequent sector, was intercepted by US authorities upon arrival and deemed inadmissible under local laws.

Air India confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that the crew member had been off‑duty and travelling for positioning purposes. “One of our crew members travelling from Delhi to San Francisco on 14 April was found to be inadmissible as per local laws and has been sent back to India,” the airline said, adding that the individual has since been derostered pending investigation.

According to sources cited in the report, the pilot was allegedly found in possession of marijuana during arrival checks. Air India has initiated an internal probe and reiterated its zero‑tolerance stance on violations of law, safety, or professional conduct. The airline said strict action will be taken in line with company policy once the inquiry is complete.

The incident comes at a time when global regulators continue to emphasise heightened compliance standards for flight crew, particularly during international travel and cross‑border security screening.
