Addu City, Maldives – Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has officially commenced preparations to introduce an international-standard Duty-Free operation at the new terminal of Gan International Airport in Addu City, marking a major step in transforming the southern region’s gateway into a competitive player in global air travel.

The new retail venture is designed to significantly enhance passenger experience while expanding premium shopping services beyond the Greater Male’ area. By bringing globally recognized retail standards to the south, MACL aims to position Gan International Airport as a key hub for international traffic, easing pressure on Velana International Airport and decentralizing tourism-led growth.

The development aligns with the broader national vision of the Government of the Maldives to advance the aviation and tourism sectors through sustainable, future-focused projects. It also reinforces efforts to establish Addu City as an emerging hub within the international travel network, spreading economic opportunities more evenly across the archipelago.

MACL has not yet announced an official opening date but confirmed that preparatory work is underway to ensure a seamless launch of the new facility.
