IndiGo, India’s largest airline by fleet size and passenger volume, has firmed up its commitment to expanding long-haul operations with a confirmed order for 30 additional Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The agreement, which converts a Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2025 into a binding purchase, brings IndiGo’s total A350 order book to 60 aircraft.

The move marks a strategic pivot for the low-cost carrier as it prepares to enter the widebody segment and scale its international footprint. With the A350’s long-range capability, fuel efficiency, and passenger comfort, IndiGo aims to connect India to new global destinations and support the country’s ambition to become a major aviation hub.
“Today is a special day for IndiGo as we solidify our commitment to expanding our international footprint and offering unparalleled connectivity to our customers,” said Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo. He emphasized the airline’s confidence in Indian aviation and its partnership with Airbus, noting that the A350 fleet will be instrumental in achieving IndiGo’s goal of becoming a leading global carrier by 2030.
Airbus echoed the significance of the milestone. “The A350’s unparalleled fuel efficiency, range and passenger comfort perfectly align with IndiGo’s ambitious growth plans and international long-haul network ambitions,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales for Airbus Commercial Aircraft. He highlighted the aircraft’s role in supporting IndiGo’s expansion into new markets.
India’s aviation sector is experiencing rapid growth, driven by rising household incomes and increased demand for international travel. The A350 is well-positioned to meet these demands, offering a 25% reduction in fuel burn, operating costs, and CO₂ emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft. It also supports up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) usage, with Airbus targeting full SAF capability across its fleet by 2030.
Airbus has maintained a longstanding partnership with India, contributing to the development of its civil aviation sector for over five decades. While the A320 Family has democratized domestic air travel, the A350 is now poised to unlock India’s long-haul potential.
As of September 2025, the A350 program has secured over 1,400 orders from 63 customers worldwide, reinforcing its position as the leading widebody aircraft in the 300–410 seat category.
