Operations at Milan Bergamo Airport were suspended today morning following a fatal incident in which a man was pulled into the engine of a taxiing aircraft. The tragedy occurred at approximately 10:20 a.m. local time on the airport’s taxiway, prompting an immediate shutdown of all flight operations.

According to Italian media reports, the victim, a 35 year-old man was not a passenger or airport employee. He had reportedly abandoned his vehicle outside the terminal and breached airport security before running onto the tarmac. Authorities believe the individual may have intended to take his own life.
The aircraft involved was an Airbus A319 operated by Spanish low-cost carrier Volotea, preparing for departure to Asturias, Spain. The incident occurred shortly after boarding was completed and the aircraft began taxiing away from the terminal.
SACBO, the airport’s operator, confirmed the suspension of flight operations due to “a problem that occurred on the taxiway,” and stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances. Emergency services, including police and firefighters, responded swiftly to the scene.
During the disruption, at least 19 flights were cancelled and several others diverted to nearby airports including Milan Malpensa, Verona, and Bologna. Air traffic resumed around noon, but delays continued throughout the day.
