A formal inauguration ceremony was held today at Maafaru International Airport to mark the completion of its comprehensive redevelopment project. Attended by government officials, aviation executives, and industry stakeholders, the event highlighted the airport’s enhanced infrastructure and its strategic role in supporting air connectivity across the northern Maldives.

Maldivian operated its Airbus A330 to Maafaru today on the occasion as the first commercial wide-body aircraft to land at the airport.
Maafaru International Airport was officially inaugurated on 2019, funded by a $60 million grant from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, the airport was designed to support both domestic and international operations, with a focus on serving nearby luxury resorts. Initially built with a 2,200-meter runway, Maafaru quickly became one of the busiest airport for private jet arrivals in the country
The airport’s upgrades include a runway extension from 2200m to 2800m, expanded apron capacity to accommodate up to 26 aircraft, and improved ground handling and navigation systems. These enhancements enable Maafaru to handle wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777 and Airbus A330, paving the way for long-haul international operations.
