Discover Airlines Moves Operations to Velana International Airport’s New Terminal 1

Discover Airlines has begun operating from Terminal 1 at Velana International Airport (VIA), marking another step in the phased relocation of international carriers to the airports’ newly opened facility.

The airline’s first service into the terminal was greeted with a ceremonial water salute, a traditional gesture to mark significant aviation milestones. Senior officials, including Ibrahim Nazeem, Managing Director of the Road Development Corporation, and Deputy Managing Director Muhthaba Latheef, joined VIA’s senior management to welcome passengers arriving on the flight.

Discover Airlines will continue to operate twice-weekly flights between Male’ and Frankfurt, strengthening direct connectivity between the Maldives and Germany. The move is expected to support the Maldives’ tourism industry by offering European travelers greater convenience while also demonstrating the operational readiness of Terminal 1.

Velana International Airport’s new terminal, inaugurated earlier this year, is designed to handle millions of passengers annually and features modern facilities such as boarding bridges, e-gates, and upgraded baggage systems. The transition of airlines into the facility is being carried out in phases, ensuring smooth operations while showcasing the Maldives’ investment in world-class aviation infrastructure.
