National airline Maldivian commenced cargo freighter operations yesterday with first flight to Colombo with Trivandrum, Chennai, Thailand & Dubai as further destinations. Many other airlines internationally are either commencing cargo operations or expanding their existing operations.
Even though majority of the world is now under lock down that does not stop consumers from ordering goods online and the need of cargo flow around the world. These supply chains are required to be in operation globally to meet consumer needs.
Normally passenger airlines generate lower income on cargo as they primarily focus on passenger services however with decline in passenger travel they can focus more on cargo operation. With decline in revenue any operation that can generate income would be beneficial for any airline.
