National Airlines Maldivian placed an order for two ATR 72-600 series and one ATR 42-600 series turboprop aircraft in January of 2022.
Today, two ATR 72-600s departed from Toulouse, France for the ferry flight to Maldives. The two aircraft are scheduled to land at Velana International Airport on 4th January 2023.
These 3 aircraft were to initially join the fleet in October 2022 however due to manufacturing issues the deliveries were delayed.
Maldivian temporarily leased an ATR 72-500 operated by Swiftair in order to meet high operational demand during the new year season.
The total acquisition cost of the three aircraft is reportedly USD 60 million (MVR 925 million) which is paid through a loan.
According to Maldivian Managing Director Mohamed Mihad; the airline will be adding 3 more ATR aircraft by the end of 2023 for a total of 6 ATRs.
